Lemon Swamp And Other Places: A Carolina Memoir
Published in Audio Cassette by Books on Tape, Inc. (01 June, 1987)
Author: Mamie Garvin Fields
Average review score:

Dignified, amusing memory of a southern black childhood.
Ms. Fields has a wonderful story-telling ability, that brings you into her world so that you too, can look out at her world. You don't have to be a woman, young or black to be on her side, and see the pride and dignity with which she and her "people" thrived in that stifling time and place.

Enjoyable,entertaining and historical...
The Lemon Swamp made me recollect warm thoughts of my own grandparents, esp.my Grandmother. Some of Mamie G. Fields's remembrances are very enjoyable to read and often have cultural or a historical significance. Her comparisons of Boston and Charleston during the 1976 Bicentennial were quite interesting. Despite I am not a black woman I could identify with her in terms of the older generation of my family. I've now lived in Charleston area for approx. 15 years and I feel more at home here than I did growing up in New England.A MUST READ BOOK!

Not enough stars for rating
There are not enough stars on this site to rate this book. I read it continuously until I was done and then wanted more. Although it is easy reading and gentle on the spirit, this book is an anthology of events important to the history of African Americans and Black home life of a more genteel time. I wish it was required reading for everyone. It certainly would do much to clarify the problems African Americans have had in this society. It is also very humorous and not all facts and dates. Actually, the author, who appears to be a warm and nurturing person, supplies dates and figures so subtly that they do not interfere with the reading. I am buying another copy as a gift. If I were still teaching, I would certainly have this book on my reading list and every student would have to read it until they got it...

The Art of Being Well Informed: What You Need to Know to Gain the Winning Edge in Business
Published in Paperback by Avery Penguin Putnam (October, 1993)
Authors: Andrew P. Garvin, Hubert Bermont, and Robert I. Berkman
Average review score:

One of the things you SHOULD have learned in school...
Some of the particulars in the book are a bit dated, and a few of the examples tend to go on for a bit too long. That being said, this is an excellent book for anyone interested in becoming a better informed person. Mr. Garvin gives sound advice on how to bcom more 'concious' of information and how to find the right 'sort' of infomation you need. He talks authoritatively about the variety of sources available and the usefulness of each type. Despite the minor flaws, this book is worth the cost for bringing the topic together in an easy to understand manner. I'd recommend it to anyone!

The Irish bagpipes : their construction and maintenance
Published in Unknown Binding by Blackstaff Press ()
Author: Wilbert Garvin
Average review score:

It's a "GOOD" book, not a "GREAT" book.
The drawings and text are clear and concise for someone who wants to learn Uilleann (Irish Bellows ) bagpipe construction. The only draw back is the author assumes you have a fair amount of wood and metal working skill so some of the problems that are asscoiated with instrument building arn't covered. There is also a section on reed making. You can get more detailed information from one of the reed making books that the Uilleann pipers society sells. However, for someone who has the skills this book is clearly written and quite helpful.

Tales from the Floating Vagabond
Published in Unknown Binding by Avalon Hill Game Co. ()
Author: Lee Garvin
Average review score:

Good poke and good fun!
A great poke at the often all to serious pen and paper role paying game genre. Rather than a 'dungeon master', you're a 'barkeeper', and it pretty much follows that line. And it's playable!

Tropical Tastes and Tantalizing Tales
Published in Hardcover by Valiant Pr (March, 1993)
Author: Carol Garvin
Average review score:

A cookbook that should be read not just used!
While the recipes are tasty themselves, the stories and ancedotes are also marvelous. The essence of the tropics is captured in this book through both the stories and the recipes. Not for those looking for low fat/low calorie selections - these are meant to be ENJOYED!

Review for the CLEP Social Science and History Examination
Published in Paperback by Comex Systems (26 March, 2002)
Authors: Ann Garvin and Eileen Curristine
Average review score:

Not even close!
I used this book solely as a review for the CLEP exam, and received a score of 55 (barely passing) as opposed to the actual CLEP books - I got a 96 using the "official CLEP guide".

This book barely has any of the actual test material included in it, and the test had many, many things not even remotely touched upon in the book. I definitely will NOT use this brand again.

This book is good but not enough.
This book will help prepare for the exam but it is not enough to pass the test. I was able to pass because I also took the History I, Intro to Sociology, American Government, and General Humanities CLEPS.
Even after I finished the exam, I was not sure if I passed. It is a tough test and this book alone will not be enough to pass.

Very Good Material.
This review is for those of us that had/have little or no background in the subject area, but need to pass the clep.

This book is an excellent start. It covers a wide array of material and the sample tests are appropriate to the type
of material on the real Clep. However, If you do not already
have a background in the subject area, this book is not enough.

In order to pass the clep, you should use four books.

1. This book
2. Cracking the Clep
3. The Best Test Preparation for the Clep (R.E.A.)
4. The Best Review for the Clep (R.E.A.)

All of these books together cover enough material and expose you to enough various concepts, that you should be more than prepared to pass the Clep.

While none of the Clep books contained any actual test questions, the concepts covered in the materials definately were on the test. This book was an enormous help.

ps. I passed the the test in the 98th percentile with an hour
and 18 minutes still left on the clock.

Operations strategy : text and cases
Published in Unknown Binding by Prentice Hall ()
Author: David A. Garvin
Average review score:

An outdated text and cases on production strategy
I read this book long after its purchasing. Its text stuff is short (just a couple of papers from HBS) and a couple of ideas about the prospective role of production as part of the strategy function of any company and quality control management. All of it is very outdated. In adition, cases are not liable for selfstudy. So, Little profit is to be got from this book from selfstudy.
